Does Your Dog Need a Dog Coat?

Sensitivity to cold in dogs: Does your dog need winter clothing?

The cold days are just around the corner, and just like us humans, our dogs all react differently to the cold. While some four-legged friends love the cooler weather, there are others who are much more sensitive to low temperatures. But how can you tell if your dog is cold and might need a winter jacket?

Which dogs are particularly sensitive to the cold?

Some breeds, such as huskies or Bernese mountain dogs, are perfectly adapted to cold weather due to their thick fur. However, the situation is different for many other dogs. The following dogs are particularly sensitive to the cold:

  • Short coated breeds such as Dobermans, greyhounds or boxers, which have little undercoat and are therefore hardly insulated.
  • Small breeds such as Chihuahuas or Miniature Pinschers, which cool down more quickly due to their lower body mass
  • Older Dogs and puppies have less efficient temperature management and often require additional protection.
  • Dogs with health problemssuch as joint or metabolic diseases, are also more susceptible to cold.

How can I tell if my dog is cold?

Watch out for the following signals:

  • Trembling or shivering is a clear sign that your dog is cold.
  • If your dog frequently sits down or refuses to move on during walksthis may be due to discomfort caused by the cold.
  • raised paw or a tucked tail can also be a sign of the dog feeling cold.
  • Stiff movements or a crouched posture indicate muscle tension, which can be caused by cold.

The right winter clothing for your dog

If you notice that your dog is sensitive to the cold, suitable winter clothing can help. But how do you choose the right jacket?

  • Material and function: Look for water-repellent and windproof materials to keep out moisture and wind. Inside, the material should be warm and breathable.
  • The Perfect Fit: The jacket should fit snugly without restricting the dog's freedom of movement. Pay particular attention to the area around the chest and stomach, as this is where dogs lose the most heat.
  • Lightweight: Especially for small dogs, it is important that the clothing is light and does not put additional strain on the dog.
  • Practical DetailsReflective elements increase safety when walking in the dark. You should also make sure that the clothing is washable and easy to care for.

Getting your dog used to winter clothing: a positive learning process

It is important to note that many dogs initially find wearing clothing uncomfortable and need to get used to it.

To minimise stress and ensure that your dog accepts his winter clothing, you should train him to get dressed in a positive way step by step.

Start by slowly getting your dog used to wearing the clothes by only letting him wear them for a short time at first and rewarding him with treats. Praise your dog and make sure that he associates wearing the clothes with positive experiences. In this way, he will soon enjoy wearing his winter jacket without it being uncomfortable for him.
